①狛犬 a pair of guardian figures/gargoyle
 ※guardian dogs は、目の前のものが犬に見えるときだけ可能。

 ※硯が意外に出てこない割に博物館でよく見かける。

※Wish he were our side. のように仮定法で表現する超訳のも可。

 ※feel guiltyにするか、反語的に「できるわけない」とするのも可。

翻訳
①世の無常を痛切に感じた直実は、戦が終わると浄土宗を開いた法然の下で出家し、敵が極楽浄土へ往生できるよう供養し続けて生涯を終えたという。
※世の無常 nothing stays the same in this world/the transience of life/the only constant is changing
※極楽浄土へ往生する to reborn in the pure land, the Buddhism version of the heaven
※供養し続けた he kept holding memorial service for his enemy
※生涯を終える spend the rest of his life.

②「平家物語」は無念を抱いて亡くなった人が安らかに往生できるよう祈る「鎮魂の文学」である。
※平家物語 “The tale of the Heike”
※鎮魂の文学 “the novel of requiem”
※無念を抱いて亡くなった人が安らかに往生できるように祈る
to repose the soul of the dead with resentment to reborn in the next world.

③穏やかな瀬戸内海の平氏と対照的なのが、坂東の沼地を必死で開墾してきた武骨な源氏なのだ。
※源平の出身地が全く異なる背景であることを最初にまとめて述べる。
The background of Taira clan and Minamoto clan is totally different.
※瀬戸内海 inland sea of Setouchi
